Integrative Approach to Counseling Key Concepts The central idea in an integrative approach to counseling is one of a patient’s ability to affect their life through the choices they make. William Glasser suggests most people’s unhappiness stems from the lack of meaningful relationships, and most relationships are either successful or a disaster based on the choices we make (Corey, 2013). Patients are able to positively or negatively impact their mental well-being by making choices that deepen their interpersonal relationships. Expanding on Glasser’s ideas, existentialism and the choices it offers, gives an individual the opportunity to experience freedom. They are no longer tied to a deterministic view of life, but are instead given license to create the life they wish to have, unencumbered by the weight of societal, cultural, or familial expectations (Corey, 2013). Both choice theory and existentialism closely mirror ideas taught in Protestant Christianity: people are free to make choices about their behavior and lifestyle, and all choices have an outcome. That outcome can be positive (salvation), or negative (damnation). If one believes the rules as explained in the Bible, the outcome of one’s life rests in their choices. The perpetuation of words with certain connotations onto certain groups or ethnicities is done through repetition, and the technique works. It creates stereotypes that society adopts – why is it that someone with an Arabic sounding name is more likely to get a special security screening at the airport compared to an English man – or – that a black man is more likely to be suspected of a crime than a Caucasian woman? These stereotypes, largely developed by the media, can have a large impact on criminal trials in Canada. In this aspect, the top officials of the organization shall determine the current OHS policy at workplace, determines the roles and responsibility of the people accountable for the same, to assess the performance to see whether the resources are up to the mark and helps to improve the OHS system. A policy regarding occupational health safety shall be distributed throughout the organization in order to aware the diverse nature of the workplace (Occupational health, n.d.). Proper measurement evaluation of all the aspects of OHS programs shall be done within the organization so as to meet the objectives in the long run. The monitoring and evaluation process shall be interlinked with the on - going activities and a corrective measure shall be established. There is certain physically demanding wo rk which demands for standing in the kitchen for long hours, repetitive activities in the kitchen such as chopping, cleaning of the utensils, stirring, carrying heavy loads such as bed or any other furniture carrying a loaded tray also pose problems in the long run. It has been seen that, high noise levels high sound levels such as Discotheques, Pubs or night clubs leads to hearing loss (Hasle Zwetsloot, 2011). It has been seen that, in most of the cases the noise levels are high in the hotel industry as the customers are talking to one another, waiters shouting on each other, clashing of the utensils different kitchen appliances (Worsfold Griffith, 2003). The low light conditions in the hotel might be pleasant for the customers but it may cause high levels of destruction i.e. tripping, falling, etc. Food spills on walkways, slippery mats, no signs and low lightings can lead to slips, trips fall. Use of sharp needles, knives shall be done by wearing disposable gloves. Tongs p ilers shall be used pick other sharp objects. In case of cleaning the washrooms, workers come across various fluids such as blood spills, feces, etc. Therefore, use of disposable gloves along with various other visible materials shall be used. Use of disposable towels shall be used to dispose it off in the garbage bin (Ganesh, 2011). Safe work procedures refer to the directions i.e. how the work shall be carried out in a given organization. Information regarding hazards how to eliminate the same is done to minimize the risks. It shall be seen that, a written safe work procedure shall be followed which would help the workers to perform the activities in the long run. some of the common hazards in the hotel and catering industry such as disposing off the hot oil, handling garbage, turning mattresses, cleaning washrooms, cleaning swimming pools cleaning blood or other fluids require safe work procedures. The process of developing the safe work procedures is to determine the overall task which requires safe work procedures, identification of the hazards associated with each step break down the task (Balzaretti, Marzano Cattaneo, 2009). For example, in case of hotel and catering industry one of the safe work procedures for a basic kitchen hazard has been listed in this section. The task is to dispose of the hot oi l from the deep fat fryer and transfer it to the oil dump drum. Following safe work procedure steps shall be followed i.e. drain the hot oil into a container, transport the same outside the kitchen transfer the oil into the oil dump drum. Some of the basic hazard associated with the same is to cool the oil in the deep fryer (allow the oil to cool before draining it), drain the oil into a container and slowly transport the oil out in the oil dump drum. Once the safe work hazards have been prepared, various ways to eliminate the same shall be done. For example to clean the deep fat fryer some of the proactive measures shall be taken into place i.e. use non slip closed toe shoes, rubberized gloves shall be used while practicing the same, goggles and face shield shall be used a rubberized apron long enough to cover the lower legs shall be used. It shall be ensured that, proper training education shall be imparted to the workers so as to have a safe and healthy working environment. F or example, workers shall be well trained while performing various hazardous tasks. Orientation has been referred to as one of the key measures to prevent work related incidents (Akram, 2015). They provide the opportunity to the workers to establish health safety guidelines before they start with a new job. Orientation shall take into consideration tasks which the worker is not trained to do so, encourage the workers to raise queries when he/she is unsure about a particular task. In addition to the above, any hazardous material, rights responsibilities of the workers shall be informed along with how to report the hazard and provide first aid to the same. In depth supervision training shall be imparted to the workers as to how to perform their task in a well-defined manner. If the workers would be trained properly, they will be able to carry the task in a positive manner. Demonstrations regarding safety procedures and precautions shall be explained in the orientation this will pro vide awareness amongst the workers (Ambardar, 2015). Lastly, it shall be taken into consideration that occupational health and safety is referred to as team effort. Both employers along with workers are responsible for the same. Guido is a complex individual; he had a certain aurora about himself. His character isnt the type of person who is intellectually inclined; even so he was just that. Guido protects his family, fights for their freedom , as he endures betrayal all while learning about the cruel people in this world. Guido falls in love with a woman name Dora. She is from the upper class and he refers to her as his princess. She is not a Jewish therefore she is privileged to more things than her admirer. Dora and Guido fall in love and have a beautiful son named Giosue. One morning as Dora left to go pick up Giosues grandmother the Nazi soldiers came and took Guido and his son away. They were being sent to a concentration camp. She went to the train station and demanded that she board the train along with her family. The theme of love and family values is constantly referred to in this film. In different parts of the film Guido does things that could potentially get him killed just to show his love for his son and his wife. For instance, while Guido was serving the Nazi soldiers he changed the record on the record player to him and Doras song, so that she could hear it and feel comforted and loved. Guido had an immense heart and was the definition of selflessness. During this time period the word freedom seemed nonexistent. Jews who at one point owned homes, businesses, property, etc. now had nothing. The Nazi came in and took everything from them. Jews were blamed for any and every problem that occurred in society. If the crops were dying then it was somehow the Jews fault. If inflation was high it was the Jews fault. Hitler had implanted the idea that Jews were the reason for all chaos in society. Unfair you might say; what about their rights and their freedom. Well according to Hitler they had no freedom. Concentration camps were set up all over Europe. Jews were taken and put in these death camps to work harsh labor hours, doing dangerous jobs with no pay and little food. The Nazi killed off all children and old people who entered these camps, for the simple fact that they could not work and produce the war materials that the soldiers needed. The inhumane conditions and actions of the Nazi soldiers killed thousands of Jews. The Jews were on the brink of extinction from this unjustified genocide. The doctor in this film, played an important role in the development of Guido as a person. Guido considered the doctor to be personal friend that he had on the inside. The doctor however did not see their relationship as such. To him it was more of a cat and mouse game. The doctor toyed and played on Guidos emotions and his desperate plight for a way out of the camp. Guido and the doctors relationship began when the doctor came to Guido in a resturant he worked in, about solving a riddle that was sent to him from a friend. Guido would solve the doctors riddles out of the kindness of his heart. When Guido was between a rock in a hard place and needed a favor from the doctor, the doctor insensitively ignored his request. When the doctor portrayed his true colors, Guido was surprised, but was hurt overall. Guido had fabricated the idea in his mind that the Doctor was his friend and would help him and his family escape the concentration camp. At this point in the movie Guido realizes that he is on his own. Every single person has a personal vendetta or agenda that they want to accomplish. People will do whatever it takes to reach their goals. The world does not give out handouts. Everything that anyone accomplishes in life is going to take hard work and dedication. We have to stand up like Guido did and fight for what we know is right. Guido turned his pain and fear into motivation and persevered through each day in the camp; he kept a positive outlook on life at all times. It was Guidos ultimate sacrifice of his life that made him the real hero in this film. Sometimes we all have to learn things the hard way. Yes it may hurt, but we have to learn how not to wallow in that hurt. We must learn how to be like Guido and turn our circumstances and pain into our motivation to make a difference and bring about change. When I think of Guidos character I refer back to the story in the bible of David and Goliath. Guido symbolizes David; mentally and emotionally strong. Goliath was the Nazi army and Hitler, physically strong but could not stand against the power of its enemy. Life is a lesson that we go through every day. Instead of just going through the motions, be the person who challenges the status quo and bring about change for all. When I think of Guido and his family in the film, Life is Beautiful, immediately the word that comes to mind is courage. Courage is what sparks change in life. What change will you bring about in your lifetime?
